Residency:    Florida based preferred or knowledge of Florida issues 

Paid board:   No (all roles are voluntary) 

Description: 

The Florida Food Policy Council (FLFPC) is looking for applicants with experience in non-profit management, farming, finance, accounting, board development, programming, and food policy.Prospective Food Policy Council Members should also bring expertise in local and regional food-related issues and represent a food system sector or community stakeholder partner. 

The FLFPC is committed to building a Council that reflects the diverse population of Florida’s communities and encourages applications fromfarmers, fishermen, veterans, people of color, and members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community (LGBTQIA+). 

The FLFPC is firmly committed to a policy against discrimination based on age, sex, race, religious creed, sexual orientation, disability, or ethnic or national origin.

The FLFPC board members have several main activities/roles:  

  • Bring in Funds

  • Attending all FLFPC board meetings   

  • Advise the Food Policy Executive Director and other staff on FL policies, funding, and programs   

  • Research and analyze food policies and data, including monitoring best practices from other cities  

Public members are appointed by the (Executive Director) and voted on by the current board members.Board members serve terms of three (?) years and may be reappointed for up to two consecutive terms. Board members are not compensated for their participation in the FLFPC and may not use the FLFPC as a channel to market their own business/organization.

Qualifications: 

  • Applicants should bring experience and expertise to the FLFPC. This can include lived experience of food insecurity or community organizing, educational experience, professional experience, or other relevant experience.  

  • Public members should be committed to racial equity in the food system and to community-informed policy development.   

  • Public members should have the capacity and interest to dedicate a significant amount of time to the FLFPC, including organizing and attending meetings, contributing to policy documents and projects, and participating in community meetings and events.   

  •  Food Council Members serve in a volunteer capacity to guide the work of our four Working Groups and Policy Committee, serving as subject-matter experts and representatives of the Food Council’s work in the community. 

  • The Board of Directors governs the overall affairs of the Council as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with a focus on the mission, values, objectives, achievement of goals, and efficient use of resources. 

  • We seek innovative and energetic individuals with expertise in policy, research, communications, food justice, food access, food equity, as well as capital access and institutional food markets. We want representation from all links in the marketing chain, from farmers and fishermen, to food processors and restaurants, to institutional markets and those that focus on food waste and wasted food. 

  • FLFPC hosts an open application period throughout the year. New Council members are selected by existing Council members, and those selected start their terms after onboarding and orientation.
